Latin America tunes into Baku 2015 European Games

The global appeal of the Baku 2015 European Games was further underlined today, as the rights to broadcast the inaugural event across Central and South America were agreed with one of the world’s major telecommunications companies.

America Movil, which also holds rights for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, has acquired rights to broadcast Baku 2015 through a subsidiary on all media platforms across Latin America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Mr Simon Clegg, Chief Operating Officer of Baku 2015, said: “Our aim has always been to share the European Games with as many people across the world as possible, and this announcement marks another major step in that direction. America Movil has a fine pedigree in sport content distribution, also holding the rights for Rio 2016, and building upon their extensive coverage of Sochi 2014.

“The European Games are the most significant addition to the global sporting calendar in the last 50 years, so there is a clear synergy for America Movil in securing coverage of the inaugural event here in Azerbaijan.”

Through the agreement, Latin America joins the United States and Canada, India, China, Australia, the Arab world, and a host of major European broadcasters in showing extensive coverage of the European Games.

Mr Jose Antonio Aboumrad, Claro Sports General Manager, said: “It is a pleasure to announce this agreement with Baku 2015, which will bring the European Games action throughout Latin America. Viewers across the region are passionate about elite-level sport, and we are delighted to be able to bring them this important new event. I have no doubt that our Latin American audiences will greatly enjoy following the action in Baku.”
